I have a dog. His name is Bully though I sometimes call him “Devil Dog”. Now, I know he is not really the devil, but they do have a few things in common. Bully is smart, cunning and relentless. He spends his time prowling the perimeter of his pen looking for any weakness where he can dig, push or climb his way out. I have had to come up with some pretty interesting ways to reinforce the walls of his enclosure to keep him from escaping but that does not stop him. I can tell when he thinks he has found a weak spot. He gets very restless, starts barking and growling and begins his attempts to break through the barrier.
Thus goes Satan. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us”… your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour.” He’s smart, cunning and relentless. He spends his time prowling our walls of defense looking for any weak areas where he can dig, push or climb his way in to “devour” us and destroy our lives. Be on the lookout for signs that Satan thinks he has found a weak spot in your spiritual defenses. Is there strife in your life? Are you feeling unsettled? Is there fear and confusion? Remember, 1 Corinthians 14:33 states “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace …”
In a recent Sunday School lesson, we studied Nehemiah and how he was charged with rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. This was a huge task and they knew the enemy would be looking for ways to keep them from securing the walls. They banded together and worked side by side, tools in one hand, weapons in the other, ready to sound the alarm at the first sign of the enemy. Let this be an example to us. Let us stand side by side, spiritual weapons in hand, watching for the enemy who is looking to devour and destroy us, as individuals and as a church, and sound the alarm at the first sign of the enemy’s approach and GUARD THE WALLS!
